Hugo

Hugo was a 15 year old male orca who was captured in Washington in February 1968. He passed away at Miami Seaquarium on March 4, 1980.

Although Hugo was captured with other members of his pod, most were thought to be released. He was soon moved to the Seattle Marine Aquarium where he stayed until he was purchased by the Miami Seaquarium. Hugo lived in a small tank, and eventually, due to his size, the aquarium had to build a new one. In the new tank, he was joined by a female named Lolita in 1970. Hugo and Lolita performed together for the next ten years until Hugo's death from a brain aneurysm on March 4, 1980.

Hugo participated in waterworks, but he also showed aggression towards trainers and was not always reliable. He also participated in shows with the parks pacific white-sided dolphins.  It is rumored that he and Lolita may have conceived calves that never survived. At one point, Hugo injured his rostrum and it had to be reattached with stitches. Hugo grew to be a rather large whale. After his death, Miami Seaquarium never acquired another killer whale, leaving Lolita as the only orca at the park.
