Malia

Malia is a 17 year old female orca who was born at SeaWorld Orlando on March 12, 2007. Her mother is Taima and her father is Tilikum and she was the 3rd calf born to the pair.

She was Taima's first calf since giving birth to her older brothers Sumar and Tekoa, both Taima became aggressive towards months after birth. Malia is one of the few younger orcas who have met Tilikum. Taima was often grouped with her mate and months after birth, Malia was introduced to her father. The three could often be seen performing together. Malia got along very well with Tilikum.

On June 6, 2010, Malia's mom went into labor with her 4th calf. Sadly, her mom died giving birth to the stillborn calf. Malia was already very independent for her age by the time her mom had died. She spent most of her time with another young female named Nalani while growing up, but was often with Trua as well.

Malia became close with an adult female orca named Kalina, who was one of her mother's closest friends. Kalina often took care of Malia whenever Taima was needing a break. After Taima's death, Kalina helped to take care of her. Sadly, Kalina died in October 2010. Malia is a sweet and playful orca. She is very smart and has learned many complex behaviors. Although her mother did not do waterworks, Malia had been learning them before they were stopped in 2010. She had learned very basic waterworks behaviors. In mid 2016, Malia was reintroduced to Tilikum and was spending most of her time with him. They also performed together. In November 2016, she was seen more often with the rest of the pod. Tilikum later passed away on January 6, 2017.
